 Climate Change Policy and Adaptation

Over the past few decades there has been increasing interest in the impacts of climate change and variability on economic, social and environmental systems. The problems being considered have progressively required interdisciplinary expertise of professionals in natural and social sciences, engineering, law, and accounting.

IRIS conducts integrated research required for managing climate change spanning these fields of expertise. Recognizing that climate change management influences all levels of business, from strategic, through functional and operational to technical layers of activity, IRIS has structured its services to address needs at all levels, commencing with corporate governance and reporting.

IRIS develops clients' strengths to respond to new challenges of climate change management. We utilize customized approaches reflecting the technical and economic parameters of our client's specific function, product or service. IRIS believes that climate change is a business driver with significant strategic, financial, social and environmental implications for public and private sector entities. As a consequence, IRIS develops approaches to create comparative advantages to meet or exceed organizational objectives. Programs and projects developed and being implemented by IRIS are assisting public and private sector clients in meeting the challenges. Our key services include: strategic planning and policy development, emission baseline studies and monitoring plans, verification of carbon credits, renewable energy and energy efficiency projects, training and capacity building.

Strategic Planning & Policy Development
Strategic plans and policies provide direction and perspective on the development of specific actions, activities, technologies, and services. IRIS develops plans and policies tailored to the needs, philosophies and objectives of specific clients. Our experience and expertise in strategy development is used for setting competitive targets and action plans which incorporate cost-effective measures to anticipate, prevent and minimize greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and increase energy efficiency. These measures rely on sound scientific assessments, monitoring programs and adaptation planning, and are designed in accordance with corporate policies and internationally binding climate change agreements such as the Kyoto Protocol (and subsequent commitments and provisions made during various Conferences of the Parties).

Emission Baseline Studies & Monitoring Plans
Emissions baseline studies document the GHG emissions that would have occurred in the absence of a proposed project. Monitoring plans detail the surveillance and measurement activities required for the successful implementation of the same project. IRIS prepares emissions baseline studies and monitoring plans for Joint Implementation (JI) and Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects. IRIS develops baseline and monitoring methodologies in accordance with procedures outlined in negotiations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, as well as operational guidelines prepared by governments and the private sector.
Verification of Carbon Credits
Verification confirms the reduction of GHG emissions from a registered JI or CDM project, allowing for emissions trading. IRIS verifies the robustness of emissions tracking systems by creating and applying credible and replicable audit procedures.

Sustainable Energy, Demand Side Management & Energy Efficiency Projects
Sustainable energy, DSM and energy efficiency projects contribute to reducing or preventing growth of GHG emissions. IRIS can act as a project developer or assist clients by managing the entire project cycle, including: preparation of pre-feasibility/feasibility studies, and identification, design and implementation of cost-effective emissions reduction. In economies in transition or developing countries, reductions may qualify a project for JI or CDM investment.
Training & Capacity Building
Training and capacity building initiatives improve capability to design and implement programs, activities and technologies that reduce or mitigate GHG emissions and promote energy efficiency. IRIS designs and facilitates such initiatives to strengthen managerial, scientific and technical skills. This, in turn, promotes the dissemination, application and development of environmentally sound technologies (EST) and know-how. Our services address client-, country-, and sector-specific circumstances.

IRIS' services related to training and capacity building include:

  • Training in project development, management and operation of climate change technologies
  • Implementation of technology development and transfer
  • Demonstration projects for the use of ESTs
  • Enhancement of skills for the adoption, adaptation, installation, operation and maintenance of specific ESTs, and methodologies for evaluating alternative technological options
  • Development and implementation of standards and regulations that promote the use, transfer and access to ESTs
  • Improvement of knowledge on energy efficiency and utilization of renewable energy technologies
